Cavities aren't always easy to notice, no matter how obvious you think they may be. You could go a long time with a cavity and not even know it, assuming you don't go through regular cleanings with your dentist. The sooner you can take care of a cavity, the smaller it will be. Here are four signs you may have a cavity.

Pain

If you experience unusual pain in your mouth for more than a day or so, you need to get in to see the dentist. This could be a cavity or a number of other issues, all of which you need to get taken care of. If a cavity has been in your mouth for a while, it will likely cause more pain than a fresh cavity. Respond to your situation accordingly.

Difficulty Brushing

If you find food starting to get trapped in certain crevices in your teeth, there may be a cavity in there that you can't see. You may also notice this when you aren't brushing if there is food stuck in there that you cannot get out with your tongue. Make an appointment with your dentist to look over this problem.

Sensitivity

Cavities create direct pathways to the roots in your teeth, which are very sensitive to temperature changes. If you find that you have difficulty eating cold or hot foods near one tooth, you may have a cavity. Your sensitivity may also happen around acidic foods or abrasive toothbrushes. This could be a sign of worn enamel instead of a cavity, but either way, you need to get it taken care of.

Bad Breath

There are a number of potential causes of bad breath, so having bad breath does not necessarily mean you have a cavity. However, if your breath persists after change your diet and brushing habits, you might want to see if a cavity is the reason. The bacteria that comes in tooth infections has a foul odor to it, one that you may not notice until someone else points it out. Correct the cavity, and you may be able to get rid of the smell.

If you think you have a cavity or just want to make sure your teeth are health, schedule one of your yearly cleanings to coincide with a checkup. Your dentist will look over your mouth and make sure any problems you have are corrected in a timely manner.
